That’s how Neal Ruhl, Director of Broadcasting at Oakland University, described the school’s new ScoreVision jumbotron system.
Oakland University is a Division I university situated in Rochester, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. The campus hosts about 20,000 students and has a variety of programs, with men’s basketball as their premiere sport.
But with outdated video displays and metal box scoreboards that were original to the facility, it was time to upgrade the Golden Grizzlies’ O’rena.
Oakland University Director of Facilities, Andy Adrianse, describes the university as “ competitive and innovative with what we do. This video board project is an example of that. Our game-day atmosphere is important as well, so to be able to enhance that – not only for our fans but for our athletes and our coaches – has been a huge upgrade for us.”
Now, the athletics department has even more to be proud of.
“ScoreVision has really put Oakland on the forefront of technology and when you’re mid-major, that’s vital. What ScoreVision has done here has been very important to our efforts here at Oakland to really enhance the fan experience...You never get a second chance to make a first impression. With what ScoreVision has done here, we’ve made a great first impression.”

In addition to modernizing their LED jumbotron system, Oakland University has received an upgrade in the simplicity of producing their events and in the customer service they receive.
Just ask Leanne Schnurer, Director of Game-Day Experience and Fan Engagement. She’s responsible for coordinating and producing every sporting event that takes place in the O’rena.
“I was really nervous at first, but I learned how to use [the production software] within about a half hour. Within like a half hour I was comfortable walking around with it, using it by myself. I didn’t have very many questions and I thought it was really easy to pick up on,” said Leanne. Being able to learn ScoreVision’s user-friendly, iPad-based production software in under an hour was a welcome improvement over the 20 to 40 hours or more required to learn competitive systems. “Sometimes I have a lot of staff, sometimes I don’t have that much, so one of our favorite things about the system is that we can move with it. We’re not stuck up in our video booth.”
Leanne welcomes the fact that switching to ScoreVision means tasks that used to take hours or days can now be done in minutes. “We have a lot of last-minute requests. People come up and ask even while the game is going on if we can put up a happy birthday graphic for someone, or if we have a famous person come in attendance, we can make something and get it uploaded right during the game.”
And for Andy Adrianse, customer service has been a huge upgrade. “I’m not having to call a support line, put in a ticket, or wait on hold. It’s more personable than that. That’s something that was really important for us.”
ScoreVision is proud of our partnership with Oakland University and we look forward to our continued relationship with this school and all of our customers. To see photos from ScoreVision’s ESPN debut at Oakland University, check out our blog here.
